Question：Do you think it’s important to learn a second language when you are growing up or only in later life？ Why？
Answer：I am not sure if I entirely follow the question but my answer would be that it depends. You see， learning foreign languages can take place at any age and there is no “magic” age where you suddenly become fluent in another language with just a few weeks of effort. Of course， this is not to say that someone cannot be highly proficient in English after just one year of studying it – some people do achieve exceptional things with regard to language learning – however， most people need to put in quite a lot of work to gain a good command of a language. There is also research showing that， in general， children are better at picking up language than adults. Therefore， in terms of “natural” ability， children probably have an advantage over us older folk！ 不过， while children may well pick up language more quickly than we do， they will never be able to attain true fluency without practice. The reason for this is because the brain needs time to process all those new words and structures and for them to become “second nature”. So， as much as possible， young learners should try to use the target language on a daily basis. In addition， it has been shown that reading is more effective at building vocabulary knowledge than listening to spoken language.
综上， 我认为想要学好外语， 在青少年时期就打好基础是很重要的。
